Motorcycle Equipment Design
SALC System with wired and wireless remote controller is an industrial design project for Security General Directorate of Turkey.
6 fundamental equipments of system are designed and produced for GS 1200 model BMW motorcycle according to the state tender standards in 2016.
The state tender for SALC system was defined by Security General Directorate of Turkey according to previous experiences of the motorcycle users, Turkish policeman.

Design criteria of the project is consist of not only the standards in tender contract, but also manufacturing line of the company. Because one of the objectives of project was minimizing the mass production cost for current and future projects.
Behind the standards of tender contract, remote controllers were designed for hand ergonomic statistics in the range of 22 - 45 aged male. During the user research studies, contextual inquiry, wearing gloves while using controller was observed in the field. After collecting the feedbacks on first 3D mock-up, the design decisions are optimized for easy usage. For example; PCB size, shell radius, button sizes and distances, wall thickness.

Moreover, some button places on keyboard were added as non-functional for the first delivery of the project (filled with plastic and no switch button on PCB). Thus, if an additional button is required for next generation of the product, these empty places can be used for new functions. With this sustainable approach, the same plastic mold of controller shell can be used and the production cost can be decreased.
As one of the design challenge for the project was waterproofness criteria on wired remote controller. Because of the high speed on motorcycle in rainy weather, the most important function of the shell is protecting the electronic system from the water.
Therefore, V shaped silicone gasket is used between the joint lines of controller body and cover.

The contextual limitations are not only coming from weather conditions, also from the usage behavior of the target group. While the policeman is riding the motorcycle, it is not easy to look the buttons on the controller. So, screw boss for assembly was designed on outside of the shell with textured surface with the aim of tactile perception of the keyboard.
Monobloc polycarbonate body, neodymium magnet and mounting bracket on center of gravity is designed for motorcycle system especially. Besides, thanks to the symmetrical design of mounting bracket, its different assemble option provides an opportunity to change cable direction for different usage. It is also practical to mount on not only motorcycles, also other kind of vehicles like armored cars or ambulances.
As an industrial design project, SALC System for Motorcycle Equipment Design, has mainly 2 significant stages and milestones. First one is brief and research stage, which was critical to understand project criteria, standards of tender contract and users' contextual conditions. Second one is prototyping of first design to see problems and usage difficulties. The optimization studies after tests on mock-up was beneficial to save cost of mass production.
